I have already heard about MySpace since 2004 and browsed it now and then out of curiousity. At first I thought it sucks to join it cuz it was too "over-hyped". Most pages (still) can really turn any creature with eyes completely blind on the spot - with all its blinking, falling and outrageous combinations of shocking colors and the variety of pictures which would show up all at once, not even mentioning music and videos playing all at the same time, to avoid listening pleasure.
I even thought it was some kind of a porn or let's say "soft" porn advertising platform with all the tits and asses in there or a platform for callgirls or webcam girls advertising (I know there are really a lot of them there). Then I realized that almost everybody can advertise in there whatever the fuck they want to sell, even if its fake tits, eyes, nose, brains and everything that a human being is capable of faking and selling. So I thought it would be too embarassing to have a profile on MySpace, but well if it's the place to be, then it gotta be it.
I didn't really consider creating a profile there until I discovered the artist area - music section. You see, before I start joining any platform that deals with music, I check the music out first, which serves like a kind of business card or a representation of the community. Now if I only hear bull, I definitely would never join and be ashamed of myself to death. Believe me, I have already checked a lot of music artist communities/platforms out, but never found one that convinced me. The music gotta give me the "wooah!" effect when I listen to it. Now I'm not talking about a technical platform/community cuz that's another story.
So I started listening to different artists' music on MySpace and was amazed that many talented, still unknown independent artists are there, aside from most of the major artists as well (or their promoters). A huge platform like MySpace indeed gives musicians an opportunity to promote their music worldwide, considering the 60 million registered users. I was then convinced to give it a try and see how people on planet earth would react to my music. Are they really as good as I thought they were? By the end of 2005, I finally decided to create a profile.
Lets start up with the page customizing. OMFG! They really got some fucked-up codes in there, that - if you'll be doin' it by yourself without using finished layouts. You might end up spending your nights screaming non-stop, pulling bushes of hair out of your head, while running in circles and then jumping out of the window for the finale, cuz you just couldn't get the page right. You first try to find out which is which (bluetext, orangetext, whitetext, jerktext, siliconetext etc.).
But anyway, it's a great relief once you finally set-up your page the way you want it to be, especially if you checked it on both firefox and internet explorer browsers and they both look ok, cuz that's another pain in the ass. But then the server would be down when you try to upload something or the music players ain't workin' if you try to check someone else's crap... uhm I mean music. Or it plays but stops after a few seconds. Tom really got it goin' on.
I became active by the beginning of this year, when I decided to have more friends than Tom alone. At first I just requested "adds" from my favorite artists, so that it would give my profile, a kind of reflection of my musical influences and my taste in music without going through the normal procedure of writing everything down under the "influences" and "likes" section. I stopped requesting after a certain number of "known" artists and thought I would then just wait for requests to gain friends, and I'm glad to receive friend requests everyday.
I was at first wondering, why so many hiphop artists were requesting me for "adds" so I had to check my profile again if maybe the music genre was mistakenly under "hiphop" but it wasn't. Now don't get me wrong, I love hiphop music too and off course I appreciate the requests but I was just wondering where or how they found me... and why me? I know that a lot of people there would be spreading out requests all over the place, just to boost up their friends list, which sense I really don't see at all, but if it makes them happy then...
I purposely did not mention any collaborations that I have done in the past, or names of artists that I have worked with on my profile, cuz I'm eager to know how people would like me as Can'Tell and not because they know I've worked with certain artists that they know. I feel honored getting requests from other musicians, who also got some dope music themselves or fans, who got a great list of their favorite artists/music, mostly my favorites also.
It inspires me when fans appreciate my music and show me love. I never consulted anyone about my music before I presented them online. I just put them all up cuz I like them personally, so I was really curious if other people would like them as well.
My target audience is a group of grown-up sophisticated people with class, taste, personality and intelligence. I therefore do not aim for the mainstream fame and I'm definitely not making music for kids, even if I once had to sign an autograph for a cute little girl cuz she thought I was a member of the "Spice Girls", years ago *lol*.
But anyway, I always knew that I could count on my intuition, cuz it's all I can rely on in doin' my thang.
I'd like to thank my friends on MySpace who are giving me support and showin' me love. Also thanks to everybody for the approximately 14.000 page visits to my website - www.cantell-music.com for the month of March. I know it might not sound much for others but I'm glad my bandwidth/traffic limit hasn't been exceeded yet *lol*. For those who wanted to know about my album release, it's still in the production process and I will definitely let you all know about the release - I'm workin' hard on it baby!
Well, let's see where all of this will lead to...
